The photo above is one of the Pulau Redang marine-park islets — illustrative of the protected reefs, not the Marine Park Centre (Pulau Pinang) jetty itself.

The classic Redang day-trip snorkel stop — a small island just off Long Beach with a jetty, a snorkelling platform and so many fish used to being fed that you are surrounded the moment you get in. Pulau Pinang (not the city of the same name) is the site of the Department of Fisheries Marine Park Centre, and almost every snorkeling package includes a trip here because the fish density is reliable and the water is sheltered and shallow, which makes it the easiest, most reassuring spot for children and weak swimmers. It can get busy with boats; go early.

What it costs

The boat trip is normally part of a resort snorkeling package. A marine-park conservation fee, set by the Department of Fisheries, is collected from visitors (the rate has changed over the years and is sometimes included in a package) — check the current amount when you book. Indicative.

What to expect

  • A reliable wall of reef fish around the snorkelling platform
  • Sheltered, shallow water — the gentlest place for kids and weak swimmers
  • The Department of Fisheries Marine Park Centre, on Pulau Pinang islet
  • Included on almost every Redang snorkeling package

Our independent tip

Take the first trip of the day. By late morning the platform is shoulder-to-shoulder with day-trip boats from the mainland and the magic fades. Do not bring food to feed the fish yourself — feeding is managed here, and stray feeding harms the reef. It is the safest spot to put a hesitant child in the water for the first time, so use it to build their confidence before the open-reef stops.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Marine Park Centre worth visiting on Redang?

For the snorkeling, yes — Pulau Pinang islet has a sheltered platform surrounded by huge numbers of reef fish, and it is the easiest, calmest spot for children and nervous swimmers. The catch is crowds: it is on nearly every package itinerary, so go on the first boat of the day.

Is there a marine park fee on Redang?

Yes — Redang is a gazetted marine park and the Department of Fisheries collects a conservation fee from visitors. The amount has changed over the years and is sometimes folded into a resort package, so confirm the current rate when you book rather than assuming a figure.
